Tarraco, the roman Tarragona
The city of Tarraco was founded by the Romans in 218 BC, building a small military camp on high ground by the sea. It evolved in such a way that it soon became an important military and administrative center.
One of the key moments in history was when in the year 27 B.C. Emperor Augustus decided to settle in Tarraco to direct the Cantabrian wars, becoming the capital of Hispania Citerior and, later, of Hispania Tarraconensis.
Roman amphitheater
The Roman amphitheater of Tarragona is an oval-shaped building built in the 2nd century AD Wild beast fights, hunts, public executions and gladiator combats took place inside. It had capacity for about 14,000 spectators. Currently, part of the northern stands carved into the rock, highly eroded, and part of the southern stands, supported by concrete vaults, are preserved.
Old Town
The old town of Tarragona coincides with the first Roman settlement and is mostly occupied by the Provincial Forum of Tarraco (a monumental complex made up of two large porticoed squares that housed the main administrative, religious and cultural buildings of the city), surrounded by the Roman wall and an original voussoir door. In this area of the city you can find a varied gastronomic and leisure offer.
Tarragona Cathedral
The Cathedral of Tarragona, or Santa Iglesia Catedral Basílica Metropolitana y Primada de las Españas, is a Gothic-style Catholic cathedral built between the 12th century and the 14th century. It is dedicated to Santa Tecla, patron saint of the city, and is the seat of the Archbishopric of Tarragona. It was declared a National Monument and Cultural Asset of National Interest (BCIN).
Rambla Nova
The Rambla Nova de Tarragona is one of the main promenades in the capital of Tarragona. You can find terraces, restaurants, elegant shops, headquarters of different private and public corporations and interesting examples of architecture from the second half of the 19th and 20th centuries.
Mediterranean Balcony
The Balcony of the Mediterranean, located at the end of the Rambla Nova in the city of Tarragona, is a viewpoint located on a cliff at the edge of the sea. It is bordered by an elegant cast iron railing from the end of the 19th century. From this place, you can get spectacular views of the sea, the port, the railway station, the amphitheater, the beach and the Punta del Milagro.
